Who says that credit unions can’t innovate? Ciara Davies, Metro Moneywise Credit Union
In the latest edition of FTT Chats, we sit down with Ciara Davies, CEO of Metro Moneywise Credit Union, a financial cooperative committed to improving the financial well-being of its members. Ciara shared the inspiring origin story of the credit union, which began 35 years ago with just four Rochdale Council employees. Today, it serves over 8,000 active members with around £12 million in assets. What sets Metro Moneywise Credit Union apart is its focus on small, affordable loans and payroll-based savings—giving members a “set it and forget it” approach that builds financial resilience without added stress.
Ciara speaks passionately about the union’s member-first ethos, which is deeply rooted in its co-operative values. “We’re not a ‘computer says no’ kind of organisation,” she explains. Decisions are made with empathy and flexibility, thanks to a dedicated team and a volunteer-led board that truly believes in the mission. By offering personalised support and fostering loyalty through trust and understanding, Metro Moneywise Credit Union ensures that members always remain at the heart of their operations—a principle that many larger institutions often struggle to maintain.
The credit union has also undergone a significant digital transformation under Ciara’s leadership. Once reliant on paper applications and phone-based transactions, it now offers a fully digital experience through a mobile app—without losing the personal touch. And transformation doesn’t stop there. Ciara highlighted their recent partnership through the “Sound Pound” initiative, which unites 14 credit unions across Greater Manchester. This collaboration recently launched a program with Transport for Greater Manchester, allowing members to spread the cost of annual travel passes—an innovation designed to remove financial barriers to public transportation and allows members to benefit from cost savings.
Looking ahead, Ciara shares Metro Moneywise’ latest project: the Better Home Loan. In partnership with People Powered Retrofit and the Association of British Credit Unions (ABCUL), the credit union is helping to bridge the gap in retrofit lending by offering accessible finance for home improvements that enable access to green energy grants. It’s a powerful example of how credit unions can address both individual and systemic needs, combining community connection, financial education, and innovation. As Ciara puts it, “We’re not just here to lend—we’re here to support, guide, and empower.” With initiatives like these, Metro MoneyWise is proving that ethical, member-led finance can thrive in a digital age.
