SNAPSHOT SURVEY SERIES

The FinTech Community talks Brexit

Voting Remain, love for the UK, but a secret desire for the Netherlands topped off our inaugural bi-weekly Snapshot Survey series here at FinTECHTalents. We asked our community five quick fire questions on the UK’s favourite source of drama, heartbreak and debate. No, not Love Island – we gathered your views on Brexit.

HOW DID YOU VOTE?

More than two years on from the referendum vote that saw a little more than half the UK vote decide to leave the European Union – the FinTech community is living with and preparing for Brexit.

Over 60% of our community voted to Remain in the European Union. However, a significant 21% voted to Leave. This is below the general population vote – but should come as no surprise to those of us who work in financial services and technology in Great Britain.

HOW BREXIT HAS AFFECTED TALENT PIPELINE

Despite the turmoil within the UK government, which has seen a raft of resignations resulting from the Brexit negotiations, our FinTech community reports that Brexit has had little impact on their talent pipeline and retention. Almost 50% answered with a ‘nope’.

However, over 30% of those surveyed say that their ‘HR manager has an ulcer’ and the ‘staffing disaster has made them consider relocating to an EU country’. (more on which EU country later).

VIEWS ON RELOCATION

Considering the response to question two, it should come as no surprise that our FinTech community, by over 50%, love working out of the UK. However, almost 30% are considering relocation as an option, while over 20% are either making plans to leave the UK or have ‘already left.’

COUNTRIES BEING CONSIDERED

When thinking about relocation, this is where our community got interesting. Most of the mainstream press discuss tech centres in Paris (France) or Berlin (Germany) as contenders to the FinTech Capital crown.

However, when pressed half of our respondents chose to ‘write in’ their choice of and EU base.
Countries such as Poland and Ireland were mentioned as a write in vote – over choices such as Germany, France, Luxembourg or ‘And Nordic country’.

It should be noted that the nation that received the most votes of any EU country was ‘The Netherlands’. London may be the FinTech Capital of the World – but Holland (probably Amsterdam) is inching up as close competition.

ENGAGEMENT LEVELS

At the end our FinTech community is an engaged lot, with over 80% having either read the recent UK Government white paper on Brexit or read analysis and news reports.
